A Frankensteins monster of an album, stuffed with kraut-rock inspired electro and disco tracks. Unlike anything you’ve ever heard, Subway II is the London electronic duo’s second LP and is released on Soul Jazz Records. Detroit techno meets 1970′s European electronic rock with smatterings of Italo disco to make a hybrid of mid-tempo’ish dance records. As grimy as a piss-soaked vagrant yet more polished than ‘Mr.Sheen’s’ dining room table.
The Low Anthem – Oh My God, Charlie Darwin
Records recorded in wooden shacks really do sound like records recorded in wooden shacks. This record stinks of wooden shack’ness, reeks of pine and drips with fresh varnish. The song writing is beautiful and the folk backing sounds genuine. Lead singer Ben Knox Miller employs both angelic falsetto and a whisky drenched, cigarette tormented, throaty rasp.
Chicago natives Wilco have now knocked out seven albums. There’s been several off-record issues surrounding the band throughout this time but as they have released a collection of music to this sturdy quality, there’s no need to mention anything but the sounds. ‘Bull Black Nova’ is a particular highlight of the LP, strangely psychedelic and (it goes without saying) very well produced.
I found this an album requiring more than a few listens to digest. Initially it sat like an uneasy meal; a layer of bile waiting to re-enter the world, gushing uncontrollably from my face. I listened again and it began to settle. There are only ten songs but they are drenched in distortion and none are under four minutes. Their sound has many layers beyond the initial guitar noise such as spaced-out sweeping synths, psychedelic glitches and an amazing driving rhythm section.
Sunset Rubdown were founded by the immensely talented Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, Swan Lake). However, the band are now much more than one man alone. This is their third album and it’s stranger than Jesus juice. I don’t really know exactly who plays what on this record as all five of them are multi-instrumentalists and swap instruments more promiscuously than smackheads swap Hep C. The result is a multi-faceted sound, a mushroom-cloud of awesomeness that expands into vast landscapes of music.
Broken Records – The Earth Begins To Part
Released on the legendary 4AD roster, The Earth Begins To Part is a record suffocated with hype. Justifiably so. The six piece Scottish band conjure up music filled with emotion. Their anthemic sound is soothing and well-rounded. Singer James Sutherland has a classic rock voice that manages to be distinguishable over the full-bodied music.
LCD Soundsystem, RJD2, Devendra Banhart, Mum, The Decemberists, Neon Neon, Devlin & Darko, My Morning Jacket, VHS or Beta, Diplo, Gnarls Barkley, Tim & Eric, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. If that isn’t enough to make you listen to this LP then nothing is. Not to mention it’s Waxploitation records’ second edition fundraiser album for Darfur. Excellent exclusive music and all the profits go to a good cause
