Album Of The Week: Sonic Youth – The Eternal

Sonic Youth - The Eternal

The Eternal is Sonic Youth’s sixteenth long-player.  That’s a lot of records.  Somehow Sonic Youth are able to remain as relevant to youth today as they were when they began almost thirty years ago.  They are the undisputed reigning champions of the art-rock scene, influenced by activism, poetry, art and all things counter-culture.  Just how does a band that’s been together for twenty nine years and made sixteen studio albums still feel the desire to pursue their vision?  It shows the NYC bands strength of character, dedication and love for what they do.  It’s not even as though they have felt the need to push the boundaries and attempt to create something new.  People will complain that this record doesn’t show anything new from Sonic Youth and I’d agree with such sentiments.  However, I disagree that making a record to your strengths makes it a bad record.  A good record is a good record.   Such is ‘The Eternal’.
